We learned about Saint Lucia Day which is a holiday tradition which occurs in Sweden. It’s known as the Festival of Lights which marks the beginning of the Christmas season and it is meant to bring hope and light during the darkest time of the year. Families observe St. Lucia’s Day in their homes by having one of their daughters (traditionally the eldest) dress in white and serve coffee and baked goods, such as saffron bread (lussekatter) and ginger biscuits, to the other members of the family. The children were introduced to 3 more winter
celebrations around the world. There is only one night of the year when seven- year-old, Matus, who lives in Slovakia, looks forward to going to bed. On December 5, the eve of St. Nicholas Day, he puts a polished boot on his windowsill and quickly goes to sleep, eager for the morning to come. Like other children all over Eastern Europe, Matus believes that during this night, St. Nicholas, the patron saint of children, will come and fill good children's boots with treats. And in Spain, eleven-year-old Alejandra from Madrid opens only some of her presents at Christmas. She is given the rest at Epiphany, or Three Kings' day, which falls on January 6. On the eve of this Christian festival, the children of Spain believe that the Three Kings, or Wise men, who brought gifts to baby Jesus will also bring presents to them. In Madrid, there is a flamboyant procession through the streets, with the Three Kings throwing candies to the crowds of children who line the sidewalks. Seven-year-old Isabel comes from New York City. She and her family are Jewish, and each year, on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev (usually around December), they celebrate Hanukkah, the festival of lights. Hanukkah lasts for eight days and features an eight-branched candlestick, which Jews use to remind them of the miracle that happened when the Temple of Jerusalem was recaptured and cleansed, more than 2,000 years ago. Happy Birthday Brixton! Kindergarten celebrated Brixton's birthday by baking cupcakes and enjoyed eating them together after lunch. Brixton also switched his self portrait picture on the Birthday graph from the 5 year old position to the 6 year old postion ... We met with the Author/Illustrator Matt Travares and learned about the difference between fiction and non-fiction books, and how he created and developed his own books. Using Brixton as a model, he drew him as a Red Sox baseball pitcher in Fenway Park! Spent time creating our Turkey Trot T-Shirts with our 3rd grade buddies! Lastly ... Michaela read to the class, Wonky, Donkey by Katz Cowley, a tale about an endearing donkey. By the end of the story the reader ends up with a spunky, hanky-panky, cranky, stinky, dinky, lanky, honky-tonky, winky wonky donkey!

Field trip to 4 Town Farm! Check out the slideshow in PHOTOS! Before going to the farm, we read Tops & Bottoms by Janet Stevens, which was a great introduction about how vegetables grow, some grow on top and some grow on the bottom! After our trip, we reflected on our time there, and drew and wrote about our favorite part.
