Last week we visited the middle school's Cultural Bizaar. The students had their own passports to enter into different countries while earning stamps and playing games! Last week, we also celebrated Addyson's birthday! Happy Birthday Addyson! This week ... we were invited to the First Grade Bookworm Celebration! After reading hundreds of books collectively, each first grader dressed up as their favorite character in a book they had read, and gave 3 clues to the audience to guess the character! With the coming of spring, the children have been using their senses exploring and discovering the many early signs this season has to offer. The sounds of the returning songbirds singing joyfully, and the tree frogs peeping, the smell of the air after a spring rain, and the touch of warm dirt. We eagerly look forward to the picking of the first dandelions as they begin to appear, and seeing forsythia bloom along with crocuses and daffodils. In celebration of this rebirth, we have delved into doing what comes naturally this time of year and have begun planting our own garden of sorts indoors. Kindergarten was invited to join the Cool Banana Wig performance in the Commons! Author of Walking to Listen, Andrew Forsthoefel shared with us his journey of walking 4,000 miles across America and the conversations he had with the people he met along the way. His message was how important it is to really "listen" in order to make connections with one another. We explored the woods with the 1st grade ... listened for the wood frogs, observed frogs in the vernal pool, tried to find balance on the wooden platform,
and discovered a SNAKE! Into the Woods! Language Arts

Author and Poet, Lyn Hoopes came to Friends to teach a Poetry workshop to Kindergarten ... The children created poems under the guidance of Ms. Hoopes, listening to hear the rhythm of the poem and deciding what the “heart” of the poem was. Ms. Hoopes shared her own beautiful photographs of nature, animals, birds, and insects to inspire the children’s own poetry writing. Kindergarten explored the woods and the early signs of spring! The children found crocuses and snowdrops in bloom around the buildings and daffodils sprouting up about 4" high. We discovered a Forsythia bush which we took cuttings of and carried back to our classroom to "force" the flowers into bloom. We also searched for bugs, insects and other critters to be found inside the logs and on the damp, forest floor. Forcing Forsythia to bloom inside our classroom! Happy Birthday Shivi! Kindergarten celebrated Shivi's birthday by baking cupcakes and enjoyed eating them together after lunch. Shivi also switched her self portrait picture on the Birthday graph from the 5 year old position to the 6 year old postion! Mrs. Trepanier's 7th graders came to read their favorite childrens' book to the kindergarteners ... In appreciation of the books Mr. Kennedy donated to the classroom, the children wrote "thank you" notes and delivered them to him ...
