Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! Our Friends Helping Friends read Daisy - Head Mayzie to the class ... Next, in honor of Dr. Seuss' book, Green Eggs and Ham, we wanted to know if green eggs taste diffrent from yellow eggs. So, we mixed, halved the mixture, added green food coloring, and then cooked and scrambled yellow and green eggs. We came to the conclusion that they both taste the same. We liked them Sam - I - am! The past two weeks we have been sharing many books and conversations about Black History Month. We read Back of the Bus by Aaron Reynolds: It takes place on December 1, 1955. A boy and his mother are riding the bus in Montgomery, Alabama like any other day—way in the back of the bus. The boy passes time by watching his marble roll up and down the aisle with the motion of the bus… Until a big commotion breaks out from way up front. With simple words and powerful illustrations, Aaron Reynolds and Coretta Scott King medalist Floyd Cooper recount the pivotal arrest of Rosa Parks at the dawn of the Civil Rights Movement. And That is my dream! by Langston Hughes: "Dream Variation," one of Langston Hughes's most celebrated poems, about the dream of a world free of discrimination and racial prejudice. Both are powerful and compelling stories about our history and written from the perspective of a six year old boy! Lastly, we enjoyed what winter had to offer, snow! 100th Day of Kindergarten ! In conjunction with our exploration about the Arctic and Antarctica, the children discovered how mammals stay warm in their natural habitat! We performed an experiment using ice, a glove and Crisco. We kept one hand bare and spread Crisco (simulating “blubber”) on the other hand with a glove on. While placing both hands together on the block of ice or under the icy cold water, the children were able to feel which hand could withstand the cold longer ... “Blubber” ... they found was a great insulator! In celebration of our 100 days of school, we each made our own trail mix by counting out 10 pieces from 10 groups of snacks, made “100” headbands and wrote tallies on them to represent 100, discovered what we could build with 100 cups, and had a Hershey Kiss hunt. Each Hershey’s Kiss had a number on the bottom that corresponded with a missing number from our number chart. Children replaced the number in the number chart with the number at the bottom of the Hershey Kiss they found. Math
